Transforming Spaces and Lives: The Furniture Brat Story

In the heart of Gilbert, Arizona, where design meets purpose and furniture becomes a canvas for life’s stories, Furniture Brat stands as more than just a furniture store. It’s the culmination of a remarkable journey—one shaped by pageant crowns, modeling contracts, interior design expertise, life coaching wisdom, and the resilience of a woman who transformed personal challenges into a mission to help others create spaces that reflect their unique identities.

From the Caribbean, to the Runway, to the Showroom: Sassy Jacq’s Journey

Sassy Jacq, better known to many as “Sassy Jacq,” brings a wealth of life experience to her role as the visionary owner of Furniture Brat. Born in Barbados, her real story truly began when she graced stages as Miss Arizona, captivating audiences with both presence and purpose. This early experience in the spotlight taught Sassy valuable lessons about presentation, aesthetics, and the power of creating memorable impressions—skills that would later become instrumental in her approach to furniture curation and interior design.

Following her pageant success, Sassy’s career as a Ford model further refined her eye for beauty, proportion, and visual storytelling. Navigating the demanding world of professional modeling honed her ability to recognize quality, understand trends while transcending them, and appreciate how different elements come together to create a cohesive visual narrative. These experiences weren’t merely stepping stones in her career; they were formative chapters that shaped her unique approach to furniture selection and space design.

“I know how to interior design,” Sassy reflects, drawing on her impressive 30-year career in the field. “I know how to put things together. Wearing that hat also was very instrumental in what Furniture Brat has come to be.” This expertise isn’t just professional knowledge—it’s a passion that transforms houses into homes and spaces into stories.

Rising from Challenges: The Birth of a Vision

The path to Furniture Brat wasn’t always smooth. Sassy’s journey includes chapters of significant personal challenge, including a period when she found herself homeless with four children, escaping what she describes as a “treacherous relationship.” Rather than being defined by these difficulties, Sassy used them as catalysts for growth and transformation.

“I made a plan, to get out and to attain a much better life,” she shares, demonstrating the resilience and determination that would later become hallmarks of her business approach. As a single mother, Sassy took a part-time job at a local furniture store, earning a modest hourly wage to support her family. Two years of dedication later, she took over that business, and two years after that, she was signing a lease on her own furniture warehouse.

This personal journey of transformation informs how Sassy approaches each client interaction at Furniture Brat. Having experienced firsthand how the right furniture can transform not just a room but a mindset, she brings genuine empathy and understanding to the process of helping clients reimagine their spaces. “I’m going to make this happen one way or another,” became not just her personal mantra but the spirit behind the Furniture Brat experience.

A Name Born from Authenticity

The distinctive name “Furniture Brat” emerged from a moment of clarity during an interaction with a particularly challenging customer. “The lights just went on: We all want what we want,” Sassy recalls with a smile. “We’re all furniture brats.” This playful acknowledgment of our desire for spaces that perfectly reflect our tastes became the perfect encapsulation of the store’s philosophy—embracing the idea that being particular about your living environment isn’t a flaw but a recognition of home’s importance in our lives.

What began as Dandelion Outlet, a furniture shop specializing in scratch-and-dent items, evolved as Sassy’s vision expanded. Seeing the construction of new commercial property on Germann and Gilbert roads, she recognized an opportunity to grow beyond her initial concept. Sassy was intimately involved in every aspect of the design process during construction, selecting everything from floors to ceiling height to outlet covers, ensuring the space itself would reflect the attention to detail that defines the Furniture Brat experience.

Curating with Purpose: The Furniture Brat Approach

Today, Furniture Brat features an impressive array of home furnishings sourced from over 120 vendors worldwide. With more than 500 pieces on the floor at any given time, the warehouse showcases everything from couches and tables to quirky throw pillows, snarky tea towels, and custom-made candles. What sets these selections apart is Sassy’s curatorial approach, developed through decades of design experience and refined by her life’s journey.

“I love things that have a story,” Sassy explains, revealing the heart of her selection process. “If it’s authentic, if it’s inspiring, or if it’s funny, I want it in my store.” This philosophy ensures that each piece at Furniture Brat offers more than functional value—it provides an opportunity for clients to express their personalities and create spaces that tell their unique stories.

Working alongside her husband Mark, Sassy carefully evaluates each potential addition to their inventory, considering not just aesthetic appeal but how pieces might serve their clients’ needs and reflect their individual tastes. This collaborative approach brings complementary perspectives to the curation process, ensuring a diverse selection that can speak to a wide range of design sensibilities.

Life Coaching in Disguise: Empowering Clients Through Design

Sassy’s background extends beyond design and entrepreneurship to include professional life coaching—a skill set that subtly enhances every client interaction at Furniture Brat. “As I design and work with creating spaces in my store, I bring as much as I can to the table to help my clients see how they can execute their creativity in any space,” she explains.

This coaching mindset transforms furniture shopping from a transaction into a transformative experience. “I empower them to create from a place of desire, passion, and purpose. All of my Life Coaching skill sets are coaching people without them even knowing it,” Sassy shares. This approach helps clients move beyond simply selecting pieces they like to creating cohesive environments that support their goals and enhance their daily lives.

Having raised seven children while building her business, Sassy brings a practical understanding of how spaces need to function for families of all sizes. This real-world experience informs her recommendations, ensuring that beautiful spaces also meet the practical demands of daily life—a balance that many designers struggle to achieve.

Planting Seeds of Hope: The Dandelion Dreams Partnership

Furniture Brat’s commitment to community extends beyond its showroom through Dandelion Dreams, a non-profit initiative founded to “spread seeds of Hope, improving the quality of life of those facing various challenges in our local community.” This partnership reflects Sassy’s personal experience with how furniture can symbolize hope and new beginnings.

“I remember back in the day when my family’s earnings were humble, we made do, made it work, or simply did without,” Sassy recalls. “One day I came home, and my mom had bought us a beautiful furniture set that made us feel like royalty! In that moment, I forgot that times weren’t easy, and it was nice to feel like we were able to have such a beautiful room.”

This powerful memory informs the mission of Dandelion Dreams, which collaborates with local businesses and charities to provide advocacy and resources based on specific needs. “To some, Dandelions are weeds, but in the hands of a child they become small tokens of hope for every child to make wishes and inspire dreams,” explains the initiative’s philosophy. “At Furniture Brat, we turn weeds into wishes by planting hope, while helping our customers create a space that’s as unique and beautiful as each individual person.”

Through this program, Furniture Brat donates exquisite pieces to those in need, transforming houses into homes and creating environments where families can thrive despite challenging circumstances. This commitment to community service isn’t separate from the business model—it’s integral to it, reflecting Sassy and Mark’s belief that commerce should contribute to the greater good.

Creating More Than Spaces: The Furniture Brat Experience

Since opening its doors in November 2020, Furniture Brat has grown steadily, building a loyal community of clients who return not just for the exceptional furniture but for the transformative experience. “The value I’m looking to bring is to inspire you to create,” Sassy emphasizes. “We sell things, but we’re about people.”

Located at 425 E. Germann Road in Gilbert, the showroom welcomes visitors to explore possibilities and reimagine their spaces with expert guidance. Custom-made upholstery and leather furniture items offer additional opportunities for personalization, ensuring that each client can find or create exactly what they envision.

For Sassy, Furniture Brat represents the convergence of all her life experiences—pageant stages and modeling contracts, design expertise and entrepreneurial spirit, personal challenges and triumphs. Each of these elements informs how she helps clients transform their spaces and, by extension, their lives.

When you step into Furniture Brat, you’re not just shopping for furniture; you’re engaging with a philosophy that recognizes the profound impact our surroundings have on our wellbeing. You’re connecting with a team that understands how spaces shape experiences and how the right piece can transform not just a room but a mindset. And you’re supporting a business that believes in giving back, turning the simple act of furnishing a home into an opportunity to plant seeds of hope throughout the community.

In a world of mass-produced sameness, Furniture Brat offers something different: authenticity, personality, and purpose—qualities that reflect the remarkable journey of its founder and the transformative vision she brings to every client interaction.
